## Transportation that goes where you need to go

Montgomery Area Paratransit (MAP) is The M’s ADA paratransit service. It is a shared-ride, curb-to-curb service operated with lift-equipped accessible vehicles, and it is designed to be comparable to The M’s fixed-route bus service.

MAP is for people who can’t independently use the bus for some or all of their trips because of a physical or cognitive disability. Every M bus has a lift and is accessible, and choosing the bus for some trips will never affect your MAP eligibility.

## Who Can Ride MAP

**Eligibility**

MAP is available to riders age 6 and older whose disability, either permanent or temporary, prevents them from getting on or off the bus, riding the bus, or getting to or from a bus stop. This can be due to distance, weather, terrain, or architectural barriers.

- **Unconditional eligibility:** You can use MAP for all of your trips.
- **Conditional eligibility:** You can use MAP for trips where your disability prevents you from using the bus. For other trips, you’ll use the fixed-route bus or other transportation.
- **Temporary eligibility:** You can use MAP for a limited time, up to one year.

Certification lasts up to three years. We’ll contact you about 45 days before your certification ends so you can renew without a gap in service.

**Visiting Montgomery?** Visitors with disabilities can ride MAP for up to 21 days with documentation of eligibility from another transit provider, or with proof of residency elsewhere plus documentation of a disability that prevents them from using the bus. Longer stays require a full application.

### 1. Get your application

Call MAP at (334) 625-4691 (Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) or download the forms online. Forms are available in multiple languages, in Braille, and on audio upon request.

### 2. Complete both forms

Fill out the Registration Form (you, a family member, a friend, or a professional can complete it) and the Medical Information Form, which a physician, physical therapist, social worker, or other qualified professional must sign.

### 3. Send it in

Mail both forms to MAP Eligibility Dept., 2318 West Fairview Ave., Montgomery, AL 36108. We can’t review your application until it’s complete, and incomplete applications will delay your approval.

### 4. Get your decision

You’ll receive a decision letter by mail within 21 calendar days. If we haven’t decided within 21 days, you can ride MAP until a decision is made. Disagree with a decision? You can appeal within 60 calendar days of your determination letter. Call (334) 625-4691 to get started.

## How to book and ride

*You must apply and be approved before booking your first MAP trip.*

### 1. Book your trip

Call MAP at (334) 625-4691, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. You can reserve a ride up to 14 days ahead. Next-day trips must be booked by 5:00 p.m. the day before. After hours, leave a voicemail with your pickup and drop-off details.

### 2. Be ready

Your pickup time may be up to 60 minutes earlier or later than the time you requested. Be ready at the start of your pickup window. Your driver will wait up to 5 minutes before leaving.

### 3. Ride and arrive

Show your fare when you board. Drivers will help you get to and from the vehicle, secure your wheelchair or scooter, and fasten your seat belt. Trips are scheduled so you’ll be on board for no more than two hours.

## On the ride

### What to bring

- Personal care attendants (PCAs) ride free. You can also bring one companion, who pays the regular MAP fare. Additional companions can ride if space is available.
- Service animals are always welcome. Other pets must be in a secure carrier.
- Personal oxygen tanks are allowed. Your driver will secure the tank.
- Up to four grocery-sized bags are allowed. A personal, collapsible two- or four-wheeled cart is also fine; just tell the reservationist when you book.
- Other items can be brought on board if you, your PCA, or your companion can carry them and they fit in your lap or under the seat.

### Curb-to-curb service

MAP drivers will meet you at the curb and help you to and from the vehicle. For safety, drivers can’t enter homes or buildings, back up the vehicle, or help wheelchair users up or down steps. If you can’t be left alone at your destination, a companion or PCA must meet you when you arrive.

If a driver can’t reach your door, they’ll text you. Make sure MAP has your correct phone number, and be ready at the sidewalk or the safest spot closest to your pickup location.

### Canceling your trip

**Plans changed? Let us know as soon as possible.**

Call MAP at [(334) 625-4691](tel:334-625-4691) to change or cancel a trip. Changes must be made before 5:00 p.m. the day before your ride. Canceling early helps us serve other riders.

- **No-show:** A trip canceled less than one hour before pickup, canceled at the door, or missed because you weren’t ready within 5 minutes of the driver’s arrival.
- **Late cancellation:** A trip not canceled at least two hours before the scheduled pickup time.

Frequent no-shows and late cancellations (more than 10% of your scheduled trips in 30 days) may lead to a warning letter and, if the pattern continues, a temporary suspension of service. You can appeal in writing within 15 days of receiving a no-show letter.

### Riding together

- Please be respectful of drivers and fellow riders. No eating, drinking, or smoking on board.
- Shirt and shoes must be worn at all times. Use headphones for music or video.
- Children age 12 and under must ride with an adult. Infants and toddlers must be in a car seat, as required by Alabama law.
- Weapons, fireworks, and hazardous materials are not allowed on board.

### Reasonable accommodations & feedback

The M will make reasonable accommodations in policies, practices, or procedures when needed to avoid discrimination based on disability. Tell your operator or call us to request one.

Have a comment, compliment, or concern? Call MAP at [(334) 625-4691](tel:334-625-4691). If you believe you’ve experienced discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you can file a complaint with the MAP Supervisor within 60 calendar days. Alternative ways to file, such as a personal interview or recording, are available upon request.
